Keeper of the Lost Cities Book 1 (Spoiler Free)

I will be the first to admit that, yes, I am an adult, and yes, I read middle school fiction. Am I ashamed? No! I'm very proud of it. These kinds of books are great for young adults, kids, adults, and everything in between. Shannon Messenger creates an intricate world that kept me interested from the very start. These books are designed for a younger audience, but they are some of the most captivating I have read in a while.

Messenger does a fantastic job with her character creation. Every character has an intricate personality and the relationships that develop between characters are as interesting as the main plot. The main characters all feel real and relatable, and even the side characters have a special touch that makes it feel like the reader could be right next to Sophie Foster in this story.

The combination of magic and technology reminds me of a revamped version of Harry Potter. The world feels bright and the magic system is like none I have read about. This is only the first book in the series, and it does a great job of leaving you wanting more without feeling satisfied at the conclusion of the first.

I recommend this book to readers of all ages, specifically young adults, but parents should definitely look into this series further. The action is exciting, the plot unique, and the characters are fascinating. Kids will definitely dig into this series like they would a Harry Potter or Percy Jackson. I'm eager to continue this series, as I am currently on Book 3, to see how the characters grow. It is similar to a Harry Potter as in it follows the main character over several years. Book series like this are my bread and butter, where you can really delve into the world and develop an attachment to your favorite characters.
